Yuya Hashizume was born in 1983 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, and now lives and works in Tokyo. He created the series “eyewater”, a series of “super-flat” anime characters with instantaneous tears, symbolizing the phenomenon of contemporary social and cultural communication and deep reflection, which has rapidly gained popularity in the art circle and has gained a unique place in Asian contemporary art. Influenced by the manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio, the artist adds his own creative consciousness and graphic system to create his own portraits, leaving the viewers with infinite meanings of the “story of tears” depicted in them. In 2017, he held his first solo exhibition “eyewater” in Tokyo, which received an overwhelming response after the opening, and has since become an instant hit. 2018 onwards, Hashizume held solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok, Seoul, and London, and in 2022, he will hold large-scale solo exhibitions in Taipei and Tainan, SoCal, “eyewater Taipei” and “eyewater Tainan”, which were sold out on the day of opening. In 2022, SoCal held the solo exhibitions “eyewater Taipei” and “eyewater Tainan” simultaneously in Taipei and Tainan, which were sold out on the day of the opening and became a hot new star in the contemporary art market, and in 2023, thanks to SoCal's efforts, Hashizume successfully appeared in Art Basel Hong Kong on the international stage, and was also favored by the world's top collectors, with the VIP preview sold out in three hours after the show opened.
