Yi-Han WU (b.1982) was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and graduated from National Taipei University of the Arts and Munich Art Academy.
Having lived in Germany for years, WU is deeply drawn to the peculiar coolness and delicate smoothness of the Renaissance and Flemish painting. She seeks to learn from the profound history of painting and continue the legacy of the masters. While her artworks may seem objectively depicted at first glance, they are, in fact, the result of her highly subjective arrangement.
From a female perspective, her works often blatantly depict anxieties surrounding the "body," dissecting the disarray of public standards nowadays regarding appearance, power, and gender. WU explores the contemporary interpretation of female significance through life's stages, and her depictions of women, whether fearful, composed, serene, or sensual, always aim to express their very existence. She commits to visualize a more authentic figurative of women's autonomous identities based on her understanding of women and her own experience of being one.
WU is awarded with the Second Bank CTBC Contemporary Painting Award Excellence Selection (2023). Her exhibition experiences include: Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei, Taiwan (2024)、Spinnerei Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany (2024), the Taoyuan International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition (2023), Radierverein, Munich, Germany (2023), Orangerie München im Englischen Garten, Munich (2018), Takeda Art Co., Tokyo, Japan (2015), Pier-2 Art Center, Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2015), YOSHIAKI INOUE GALLERY, Osaka, Japan (2014), KunstPavillio, Munich, Germany (2012). Her work is collected by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
