Born in 1949, in Fukuoka, Japan.
Based in Tokyo, from 1968 - 1976. Graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music with a bachelor's degree in oil painting. In 1976 - 1984, moved to Munich, East Germany to create and work. Graduated from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with a master's degree in painting. In 1984 - 1986 based in Fukuoka, Japan. Since 1986, he has been based in Tokyo, where he was a professor of oil painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music for many years.
Currently a professor emeritus at the same university.
He has created numerous landscape art throughout Japan, including the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (Niigata, Japan). His works show life sprouting from the earth. His two-dimensional works depict the relationship between the vastness of the earth and the appearance of the universe, as the wind blows, mountains sprout, and grasp the tops of the sky.
In 1999, he was awarded the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Prize (18th Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition) for his work “For Warm Image '99-Ube”. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Kanagawa and the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
At ART FAIR TOKYO 2025, he will present his latest work as the main act at the GALLERY KTO booth.
