The body is the abode of desire, and the same is true for the miniature porcelain figurines, both human and animal, that Lu reproduces in his paintings. Their supple, smooth, shiny, beautiful external appearances inescapably project a sense of fragility, of needing to be cared for. By concealing and hiding, even fleeing, exiling himself and seeking refuge in otherworldly images, he may also be burying suppressed apprehensions about reality. The mises-en-scène that Lu Hao-yuan creates are detached from reality. Nature, as he portrays it, has the feel of Eden, both primal and innocent. If artists use their paintings to create personal dwelling places of the spirit, then Lu Hao-yuan is a Creator who has obtained the satisfaction of his desires from the paradises he has built.
