Happiness Fantasy on Silk
Gihwan Seo expresses the unattainable desires of human beings as ‘Flower People.’ Even the desires that seem unattainable are realized in his works. Seo utilizes the technique of ink portraiture on silk in all of his works, using hundreds of brushstrokes to achieve the saturation and density of a color. His realistic depiction of surrealism well-captures the modern people’s fantasies and desires. While adhering to the traditional methods, Seo further expands using his own unique expressions and techniques to portray the details and delicacy of varying textures within the ‘Flower People.’ His surrealistic works provide a pleasant break to the audience from the fast yet mundane modern life. Gihwan Seo has held 25 solo exhibitions and over 170 group and international exhibitions. His works have been collected by the leading public institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, and the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum of Art.
