Yang has loved playing in nature since childhood. He enjoyed using black lines to depict tigers and large insects, mountains and seas on white paper. He also used crayons to draw himself brushing his teeth, with clear and vivid contours. The peaceful state of mind he experienced while painting was the moment when Yang felt most at ease with himself.
In 2015, while living in Toronto, the homesickness and loneliness of being in a foreign land inspired him to express his emotions through art. His visual diaries became his guiding, helping him rediscover his talent. After returning to his home country, he officially embarked on his artistic journey. In 2016, he was an artist-in-residence in Queens, New York, where he deeply absorbed the local culture and rich artistic essence. That year, he created his first artistic series using black and white lines—"Mo Gong"—consisting of 23 black-and-white drawings that covered the walls of his New York dormitory.
His love for contours and the expression of shapes led him to move from 2D to 3D works. Inspired by his father's suggestion, "Why not make animals? Everyone loves the Chinese zodiac," he created a series of vivid sculptures—the "Divine Beasts Series." In 2020, his first solo exhibition, "Direction Within," showcased all his accumulated works, including the first appearance of the "Wonder Series" and a large triptych painting, "Infinity," measuring 183 cm wide, which amazed the audience.
