Elena Renker / New Zeland
Ceramic Artist / Wood-Fired Shino Glaze
Elena Renker's works are made in a Japanese style called kurinuku, an ancient method of shaping and hollowing out clay with quick and fluid movements. Starting with a solid block of clay, she carves and cuts it, gradually hollowing it out as it dries. She decorates the pieces with iron-rich slip and applies a Shino-style glaze. There needs to be a symbiotic relationship between the shape, clay, glaze, and fire. This method gives Elena Renker great freedom in shaping, unmatched by other techniques.
Each element plays a unique role in the creation process. She can shape and glaze the pieces, but then she must hand them over to the fire to work its magic. When the kiln is opened, she never knows what she will discover.
