I was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1965. I loved painting and revealed my talent in art when I was young. I studied arts and crafts in high school, which established a solid arts and crafts foundation. In 1989, I studied ceramics in La Universidad Complutense De Madrid. Spain.
Not only did I obtain a ceramics certificate and master of ceramic materials science, but also combined Western art thoughts with my Eastern blood. For 7 years studying in Spain, I have participated in a variety of exhibitions and competitions. I not only expanded my horizons but also made a breakthrough in my creation.
I was awarded the Second Prize in the Ceramics National Competition in Spain, which set a record for Taiwanese ceramists in Spanish competitions and drew a glorious ending for my schooling.
I finished my education and returned to Taiwan in 1996. I not only introduced Western creative techniques, materials and kilns to Taiwan but also learned Spanish national treasure glaze, “metal reflex”. Metal reflex is a traditional glazing technique which is a legacy after Arabian Muslims ruled Spain for hundreds of years. I am attracted because of the complicated and changeable colours. Because I saw Joan Carrillo’s metal reflex works in the Madrid gallery, I decided to dedicate myself to firing and research.
After continuous trial and improvement, finally I created a glaze which even astonished the Spanish. Based on my passion for Taiwanese railway culture, another significant achievement is using pottery to reflect a hundred years of the history of Taiwan several years ago. Every steam train that fell into decline was reproduced with my hands while our fading memories and emotions of land reappeared.
Currently, 50 steam trains are reproduced. It is a huge project. I gradually complete the project with my will and ambition. These artworks are continuously exhibited in Taiwanese museums. In addition to artistic creation, it is my mission and contribution to Taiwanese railway culture.
For artistic creation, I constantly pursue the limit of materials and colours and explore the maximum possibility of creation across ceramics and metal. I express the sensation of land with pottery, which not only enriches me but also moves others.
I have been devoted to modern ceramic creation for 30 years, which is already a part of my life. It makes me realize the value of life and keep my passion for ceramic art.
Telling stories with pottery and creating impressive artworks are my always-on vocation.
